The new JAAEL (Joint Amphibious Aviation Electronic Library) on CD now puts volumes of amphibious aviation manuals at the fingertips of Defence personnel.
An impressive feature of this new virtual library is the user friendly capability to simplify access to the myriad of SHOL performance charts, each specific to the aircraft type, and the vessels onto which it is landing.
The library contains over 200 unique documents covering thousands of pages of information, highly relevant to the Australian Naval fleet and the helicopters that land on them.

The Department of Family and Community Services has won the inaugural Netimpact W3C Accessibility award at the IPAA Annual Reports Awards Dinner, last night.
Director of Netimpact Online Publishing Victoria Richardson, said that amongst such a varied field of departments and agencies, FaCS stands out as delivering an Annual Report that most closely complies with the W3C Accessibility Guidelines.
"The developers of the 2001-02 FaCS Annual Report have clearly set goals for achieving a high level of accessibility, before commencing production" Victoria said.
"Some of the more notable accessibility features include special attention given to correct table mark-up, textual descriptions of graphical information and clear and consistent navigation."
FaCS was also commended for providing a page on accessibility, which invites feedback and provides ample opportunity for visitors to request information in an alternative format.
The W3C Accessibility Guidelines are a global initiative of the World Wide Web Consortium, supporting communication of information via the web, in a way that is equitable to all people, including those people using assistive technologies to help them 'see and use' a web page. Generally, individuals use assistive technologies because they may not be able to use a keyboard or mouse, may not be able to see, hear, move or be easily able to process information.
Netimpact's senior information designer, Rowan Ferguson, said that we often forget that disabilities are sometimes only temporary. "People may break bones in their hands playing sport, or have temporary visual problems that inhibit their normal use of web based information" he said.
"The W3C Guidelines are well worth supporting because they make information accessible under all sorts of circumstances, maybe it's a technical disability that means you are using a text-only screen, or a network disability meaning you have your graphics turned off because of your poor modem connection to the internet, or even a personal physical disability that you cannot overcome".
From December 2000, all Commonwealth websites were to follow the W3C Accessibility Guidelines to a sufficient extent that they pass recognised tests of accessibility. These requirements are applicable to Departmental Annual Reports.

Netimpact Publishing joined with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Alexander Downer MP, to launch the Bulletin of Indonesian Economic Studies on CD ROM.
Netimpact prepared the CD for publishing by scanning the entire backset of the Bulletin, from 1965 to 2000. It contains some 14,000 pages in 36 volumes and 107 issues on one self-contained CD ROM, that works on any computer, regardless of operating platform (Mac or PC).
Users of the CD ROM can see every article published during the period 1965-2000 on their screens, in exactly the same way it was published in the Journal. They can search all articles alphabetically, or by author or by issue, and they can search the entire back set within seconds for all occurrences of particular words or phrases, using the unique key-word search facility.
Ross H McLeod of the Indonesia project said
"This will be an extraordinarily useful tool for researchers and students with an interest in the Indonesian economy and its development."
Netimpact Publishing assists many organisations leverage their important information out of paper and off the shelf into usable and useful research tools like this CD ROM. Netimpact uses their 'virtual library' concept to make information accessible.
Netimpact is at the developing edge of this technology, having recently won first place for a document library on CD, developed for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), in the 2001 UK-based Institute of Scientific and Technical Communicators (ISTC) electronic publishing awards.
In February 2002 Netimpact Publishing was proud to release the SAFESKIES 2001 Conference on CD ROM.
Some 260 delegates attended the fifth SAFESKIES International Aviation Safety Conference, held in Canberra in November 2001 by the ACT and South Eastern NSW Section of the Chartered Institute of Transport in Australia. They will all benefit from the full proceedings now available to them on CD ROM.
The Conference on CD ROM is the perfect way to re-live the experience of the conference and fits perfectly in your bag, replacing the mountains of papers one usually takes home.
The SAFESKIES 2001 organisers chose Netimpact Publishing for this task because their Conference CD Concept can include any element of a presentation, such as PowerPoint slideshows, video and audio presentations and photographs.
Chris Toogood, Netimpact Publishing Director, worked closely with the Conference Manager to create an accurate reflection of the conference proceedings after the event.
"The CD is very user-friendly, which is great for first-time users," Chris said. "It has a clean, simple on-screen design that incorporates the graphics already used in the SAFESKIES 2001 website and information packaging, so the CD can be recognised as an official product."
Benefits to the conference delegates:
Netimpact Publishing, in partnership with the Bureau of Transport Economics (BTE), has released this week a new Virtual Library on CD ROM containing over 62,000 pages of information.
The six CD set has been created to provide easy access to information previously only held in hard copy. Now transferred into digital format the Library is compact compared to the hardcopy equivalent. The Library contains an Index CD, four modal based CD's (aviation, rail, shipping and road) and a multimodal, general topic CD.
Netimpact Directors, Victoria Richardson and Chris Toogood, believe the Virtual Library will be indispensable to transport and other research communities.
"Each Library is easily searchable with every word being accessible through a keyword search, and provides information through a familiar "library type" interface using familiar terms such as catalogue of titles, and searching by title, subject and series, Victoria said.
"The virtual library becomes the physical library again at the click of a button, with each page and document being in a format that is printer friendly. Pages will print to paper exactly as they looked on the original. The library is easily updateable and is tailored to work on any computing platform - that is with Macintosh, PC or Unix operating systems."
Netimpact is at the developing edge of this technology, having recently won first place for a document library on CD, developed for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), in the 2001 UK-based Institute of Scientific and Technical Communicators (ISTC) electronic publishing awards.

The Bureau of Transport Economics (BTE) undertakes strategic and specific transport and regional issues research with the aim of better informing other government agencies, and the Australian business and research community, of emerging developments.
The results of BTE research are produced in multiple formats, including; reports, working papers, occasional papers and information sheets. These are then disseminated to a wide audience.
"As the volume of titles increases in an organisation, corporate memory about the content of these titles decreases, leading to the concern that often valuable information is being overlooked simply because it is difficult to discover in the printed form", Victoria said.
The conversion of hardcopy reports to digital format has meant BTE storage costs, reprint costs and other associated stock costs are reduced substantially. Netimpact Publishing's Virtual Library concept is response to these contemporary information management issues.

Institute of Scientific and Technical Communicators 2001 DOCUMENTATION AWARDS |
Netimpact Online Publishing, a Canberra based company providing electronic publishing and knowledge management solutions, has won first place in The Institute of Scientific and Technical Communicators (ISTC) 2001 Electronic Publication Awards.
Established for more than 50 years, the ISTC is the largest UK body representing professional communicators and information designers. The ISTC's mission is to set and improve standards for communication of the scientific and technical information that support products, services or business. ISTC members have a wide variety of backgrounds and work in many fields. The results of their work are all around you: user guides, manuals, online information, the internet, product design.
Netimpact Online Publishing has been previously awarded by the ISTC in 1999, when they won second place in the same category of awards for the National Rural Health Alliance (NRHA) Rural and Remote Health Papers 1991-1999 on CD ROM.
Netimpact's winning entry this year is the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Document Library on CD ROM. This document library is the only comprehensive collection of Civil Aviation regulatory material related to flying safety available to the airline industry in Australia. The CD Library replaces 24 volumes of loose-leaf printed materials and is designed to be re-issued every 8 weeks as a concise, accurate and legally enforceable set of technical documentation for the Australian aviation industry. The intended outcome of this project is to provide the industry with technical documentation that encourages frequent use because it is current, reliable and accurate.
Netimpact has created unique information retrieval, searching and display environments, which are carefully crafted and wrapped around the core content of the virtual library. This allows a search across whole documents or across the whole library of titles to find the exact information the client requires.
As well as virtual libraries on CD, Netimpact provides clients with other innovative information products such as networked information, database to web applications, call centre desktop products and document management applications.
Netimpact Online Publishing continues to evaluate emerging technologies and standards for the display of onscreen information. They pride themselves on the innovative application of their technical and knowledge management skills, which in turn enables their clients to use their information more profitably.
