About the Capture User Group (CUG)

Netimpact Online Publishing is currently establishing an Australian Adobe Acrobat Capture User Group.

The goal of the Australian Capture User Group is a self support network and information sharing for users of Acrobat Capture.

The Australian Capture User Group first meeting was at Open Publish in Sydney in July 2001. The group comprised a mix of organisations both commercial and government representative.

Since the Open Publish conference the group has continued to communicate mainly via email on a informal basis.

FAQ

Q: I am new to Adobe Capture and want an overview of the product

A: The Adobe website has an overview of Adobe Acrobat Capture.

Q: What file formats can Acrobat Capture 3.0 export?

A: Acrobat Capture 3.0 allows you to export to multi-page PDF, HTML with Javascript, ASCII text and single-page TIFF.

Q: Can Acrobat Capture process PDF Image files?

A: Yes. If you have a PDF Image file (non-ocr) and wish to convert it to a PDF with full OCR, you can create a custom workflow using the following steps:

  • Split multipage PDF Image file
  • Convert image to TIFF
  • Capture Image
  • Bind pages
  • Export to PDF
  • Store file.

Q: How can I improve OCR quality?

A: There are many ways to improve OCR quality, and much depends on what the original document looks like. However, here are a few settings to consider:

  • Do not use dithering or halftone scanner settings. These settings can improve the appearance of photographic images, but they make it difficult to recognize text.
  • For text printed on coloured paper, try increasing the brightness and contrast by about 10%. If your scanner has a colour-filtering capability, consider using a filter or lamp that drops out the background colour.
  • Use an Image Processing Engine such as Kofax

Q: What is Adrenalin Kofax?

A: Kofax is an Image Processing Engine that supports scanning, display, and network printing plus sophisticated colour image processing including forms recognition, deskew, line removal, deshade and edge enhancement.

Q: When working in a cluster workgroup where should the hub be located?

A: The Hub folder can be located on any work station so long as it is accessible to all work stations in the workgroup. The default location for the hub directory is in the Acrobat Capture installation folder. Ideally, the hub should be located on one of the faster Windows NT machines within the workgroup. You can join more than one workgroup from one work station, but only one workgroup at a time.

Q: How do you move a Hub?

A: When moving a hub you must ensure that the new Hub folder is shared in order to make it accessible to the other work stations.

  • Stop any workflows that are running
  • Have all stations disconnect from (leave) the workgroup that uses the hub
  • Use the Windows file system to move the Hub folder
  • Rejoin the workgroup whose hub you moved, using the new path to the hub in Acrobat Capture
  • Run any workflows you stopped.
