Australian Government Standards and Accessibility

Australian Government onscreen publishing uses the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) as best practice guidelines.

The Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI), in consultation with organisations around the world, pursues accessibility through five primary areas of work: technology, guidelines, tools, education and outreach, and research and development. See www.w3.org/wai.

In 2000 the Australian Government agreed to the adoption of the W3C's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines www.w3.org/tr/wai-webcontent as the common best practice standard for all Australian Government websites. The Government agreed in April 2000 that all Departments and Agencies were to implement these standards by target dates, and the implementation of these standards is an essential part of the Government Online Strategy.
